I thought I would share that my initiation into PR prior to formally studying it came through disaster relief.
The CBC documentary that was aired on The National about us commented on the use of PR in disaster relief, and demonstrated how PR often takes greater priority than the work that needs to be done.
This might be somwhat understandable since most relief efforts are sponsored by private donations, people who need to be reassured that their money is being used for good. But this has also led to numerous scandals in the industry, where the larger Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) have marketing and administrative budgets that have ballooned unreasonably.
Most sponsors do not intend their donations to be used for these efforts. Instead, aid agencies should be encouraged to work hard to distinguish themselves through the merit of their work, and thereby attract genuine attention from the media.

Hey Jen, your little piece really reminded me of everything that Steve Matthews from World Vision talked about when he came to our class. I have to say that I was personally inspired by his message and the idea that PR can do a lot of good in the world. I think that the technology means as PR professionals we have to be really responsible for the communications that we send out, but it's nice to know that in situations like this, we can have a clear conscience about the good we can do in the world. I hope I get the chance to work in this field some day.
